Gretna v Saints Preview

It's a bit pessimistic to look at things like that, but there's a good chance of at least one of the above mentioned occurring at Fir Park tomorrow night. With the low crowd record for an SPL match now at 431, there is every chance that bar could be lowered even further tomorrow. Gretna have sod all fans at the best of times, it's a midweek game and we have nothing to play for. There is little incentive for Saints fans to turn out. With our recent form - one league win since January, which came against Gretna - there's also a chance we could drop points.

Saints boss Gus MacPherson has admitted there will be changes from the team that faced Hibs on Saturday. This could well see Garry Brady and Alan Reid dropped, the pair both doing their chances of a new contract more harm than good at Easter Road. Richard Brittain returned from injury in Edinburgh and could be handed his first start for some time, while there could also be a return for Franco Miranda.

Up front, we could well go with Billy Mehmet and Jim Hamilton. The pitch at Fir Park is horrendous and the long ball game may well be the way to go. Craig Dargo doesn't deserve to be dropped, however it may well prove to be a cases of horses for courses. As subs go, he's a decent one to have! David van Zanten and Gary Mason are injured and will be in the stands, no doubt helping them to look fuller than they actually are.

Gretna seem to be threatening to close their doors every week at the moment, although this week's threat hasn't been issued yet. However, with most people reckoning the SPL are just keeping them going until the split, tomorrow night could end up being their last game. Of the few players they have left they have some decent ones, although most are on loan from English clubs. Gavin Skelton is the player I most feel sorry for - he's as close as Gretna have to a legend having signed for the club during their Unibond days and he must be distraught at what is now happening to them.

Gretna scored their first goal for a while on Saturday against Inverness Caley Thistle and there's every chance they could add another tomorrow night. I reckon they'll just sneak it.
