Gretna v Saints Preview

Last updated : 10 March 2008 By Stuart Gillespie
The rain and the poor state of the Fir Park pitch have played havoc with the fixtures this season and it took Gretna three attempts to get last week's game with Dundee United on. With the pitch still in a poor state and heavy rain forecast for during the night, the game is in doubt and a pitch inspection will take place at 11am tomorrow. Best to check the official site or the message board for the outcome of that as I won't be able to update the site during the day.

Tomorrow's game is probably the last of Gretna's worries at the moment and they'll no doubt be rather pleased if it calls off. The administration that has been rumoured for a few weeks has finally arrived and will almost certainly spell the end of the club's time in the SPL. However, this will not make tomorrow night a doddle. Their players are fighting for their futures and the situation could help bring everyone together. We need to be very careful, especially with the state of the pitch if the game takes place.

From a Saints point of view, we have to win. Our league form is poor at the moment and if we can't beat Gretna, who can we beat? After Saturday's nightmare showing, Hugh Murray will almost certainly be dropped in favour of Stephen McGinn. The rest of the team will probably remain unchanged, with Jim Hamilton returning to the bench. David Barron, Richard Brittain and Stephen O'Donnell are all still out.

There's likely to be a tiny crowd in tomorrow night (if the game goes ahead) and I think, Saints being Saints, we'll provide one last hurrah for cuddly wee Gretna for the media to get their teeth into. A single goal win for the administration boys.
