Dunfermline Athletic v Saints Preview

Last updated : 22 September 2008 By Stuart Gillespie
Only five first team squad who were with Saints at the time are still with the club, and it's probably a similar situation at East End Park (three players have actually switched between the two clubs since the 2006/07 ended!). However, the fans are still the same and Dunfermline supporters will see this as a chance to get a bit of revenge over their old rivals. Given our record against lower league sides in cup games they have a very good chance.

Billy Mehmet scored a hat-trick in the last round against Dumbarton and, assuming he has recovered from the shock of Saints actually being given a penalty, will relish the opportunity to add to that tally against his former club. Fellow ex-Par Jim Hamilton could join him up front which, if the old rule about players scoring against their former clubs proves to be true, gives us a decent chance of progressing! Going by the same logic, Gary Mason and John Potter must also be in with a shout of scoring for us, while Alex Burke could be on target for Dunfermline.

If everyone is still fit enough, Saints are likely to go with the same side that has taken four points from its last two games. There will certainly be no resting of players just because we're against a lower league side. One possible change could be Scott Cuthbert replacing Will Haining. The former Oldham man has had some worrying lapses of concentration in recent weeks, while Cuthbert is supposedly desperate for a place in the team and would add some height at the back. The only injury absentees will be David Barron and Tonet.

After being relegated in 2007, Dunfermline had a disasterous first season back in the first division. Now that Jim McIntyre has replaced Steve Kenny, things seem to be on the up for the Pars. McIntyre made a number of signings over the summer, including strikers Andy Kirk and Graham Bayne - the latter of whom will give Hamilton a run for his money in the quest to be the most thuggish striker on display. Scott Wilson is still there and will be solid in defence, but unfortunately the rather rash Sol Bamba won't be playing as he was recently sold to the unsuspecting Hibs manager Mixu Paatelainen.

It's anyone's guess what will happen tomorrow. We've a chance to progress, but there's also just as good a chance we could completely screw up and it will be as embarrassing as the St. Johnstone game in the Scottish Cup earlier this year. Still, at least if we lose it won't be as bad as our exit from last year's League Cup!
