Clyde v Saints Preview

Last updated : 28 December 2004 By Stuart Gillespie
It will not be an easy task. Clyde are currently second in the league, a fair number of points better off than ourselves, and they have the luxury of not having to recover from a game at the weekend. Broadwood is never an easy place to go to, we've only won once there in the league since relegation from the SPL in 2001. A junior Mendes hat trick saw Saints win 2-1 in August 2002, but at the moment I'd take just one goal.

We've gone three games without scoring a goal, and five since any of our strikers scored, six since one scored in open play. John O'Neill, Ricky Gillies and Kirk Broadfoot have all scored since that 3-0 win over Thistle, and Brian McGinty has scored from the penalty spot, but no striker has scored a proper goal since the 3-0 gubbing. Mixu Paatelainen hasn't looked anything like as good as he was before his injury, whilst new signing Stewart Kean has yet to get off the mark. Could tomorrow night be his night? There may well be changes up front, with the team looking far better last Sunday after the likes of mcGinty and Allan Russell came on. Russell usually does well against Clyde, and another option is ex Clyde man John Baird.

Elsewhere, there are a few injury worries. Kevin McGowne, Hugh Murray and Laurie Ellis were all missing from Sunday's match with injuries, and there is no news on their progress. This should mean Mark Dempsie keeping his place in the side, but it will be interesting to see what happens elsewhere in the team. Ricky Gillies and Simon Lappin were poor against Hamilton, and have been in recent weeks, so could well be replaced, whilst most fans would love to see a return to a 3-5-2 lineup. We'll wait and see.

Clyde have done well this season, getting into second place despite financial troubles over the summer which saw them losing most of their squad and their manager. Like everyone, they are miles behind Falkirk, so the championship probably isn't going to happen for them this year.

A win tomorrow would see Saints close the gap to Clyde in the battle for second. Come on lads, get the win and finish the year on a high.
