Aberdeen v Saints Preview

Last updated : 10 November 2008 By Stuart Gillespie
The last time we beat them there was in March 1987. I was just two years old and we hadn't yet won the Scottish Cup for a third time. With Saints having managed just one point and no goals from their last three games, it doesn't look as if we are going to end our dismal run at Pittodrie any time soon. The only good thing is that Aberdeen's home form this season is almost as bad as ours, as they too have only managed one win at home in the league.

Before, I continue, I'll point out there is no "Know the Ref" feature for this game as, due to it's closeness to our last match, I've not had time to write one. Fortunately, tomorrow's referee is Brian Winter - who was also in charge of our game against Dundee Uniteda few weeks ago. As a result, there already exists a relatively recent article on him and you can see that by clicking here.

Due to our incompetence when it comes to scoring, or even creating chances, in recent weeks there have to be changes for tomorrow. Andy Dorman has to start in midfield as he's slightly more attack minded than the rest of them, and if manager Gus MacPherson doesn't fancy him he should give Stephen McGinn a shot. The youngster can play some superb passes and has a great shot on him, as Rangers know to their cost. We also need to change things up front - Billy Mehmet should keep his place but Dennis Wyness should probably be dropped. Craig Dargo is the likely replacement - although Jim Hamilton could come in if we adopt the battering ram approach. However, as our crosses are rather poor at the moment we'd probably be wasting our time going with two big strikers.

The same four players are still out through injury - Tonet, Stephen O'Donnell, David Barron and Tom Brighton. The latter is probably the most frustrating absentee as he'd give us another option up front and has a bit of pace. Barron playing would perhaps allow us to move Jack Ross into midfield, but no one is overly concerned about the other two (although we obviously wish them well in their recovery!).

Aberdeen have not had a great start to the season, although they still managed to beat us at Love Street a few months ago. They have plenty of players who can cause us problems, with Sone Aluko now looking in good form. The tricky winger has shedloads of pace and will cause us no end of trouble at the back. Lee Miller is always a goal threat, while Darren Mackie has started chipping in with a few goals recently. The defence is far from strong, with keeper Jamie Langfield prone to the odd error. However, as we failed to get a single shot on target on Saturday he should have no problems tomorrow night.

We desperately need a win, but with our recent form we'll struggle to score and Aberdeen should run out comfortable winners.
