Two More Released

Last updated : 25 April 2005 By Stuart Gillespie
The two have been bit part players this season, Ellis playing a wee bit more in recent weeks than he had done earlier in the season. When they have played, Ellis has looked quite good whilst Gillies has been nothing like his former self. In fact, Ricky has failed to score a goal from open play since December 2003 and his heart doesn't seem to have been in it this season.

Ellis was signed by John Coughlin from Raith Rovers in the summer of 2003 and hasn't been too bad, but has found it hard this season to shift first Simon Lappin and then Ryan McCay from the left wing back slot. He has scored two goals this season and shouldn't have too much trouble finding a new club.

Gillies is in his second spell with Saints, having been sold to Aberdeen in the mid 1990s. At that time Saints boss Tony Fitzpatrick famously claimed he could walk into the AC Milan first team! Things didn't work out for him at Aberdeen and he returned to Love Street on loan towards the end of our title season. He was signed permanently in the summer and was our top scorer in the SPL, memorably scoring a last minute winner against Dundee United live on Sky Sports. Since that season he has had a few spells of good play without excelling on a permanent basis. A few weeks ago he had a testimonial match against Celtic and many fans hoped he would stay. Yesterday he was linked with a move to Morton, hopefully that won't happen!

It now looks like all the players Saints boss Gus MacPherson wants rid of have been cleared out, with Simon Lappin and Allan Russell still deciding whether or not to sign a new contract.
