Transfer Window Round Up

Last updated : 29 January 2007 By Stuart Gillespie
As you may have noticed, Saints haven't signed or sold anyone - but it's not for want of trying. Let's start with players rumoured to be going out.

It seems, despite what Saints manager Gus MacPherson said, the club tried to get rid of Tony Bullock to Inverness Caledonian Thistle last week. However, Caley signed another goalkeeper instead so Bullock is staying put. As he's suddenly disappeared from the match day squad it looks as if his Saints career is finished.

Simon Lappin is today being linked with a move to Norwich and MacPherson has confirmed that he did speak to Canaries manager Peter Grant. However, that's as far as it went. If Norwich have made a bit, it's not enough - Saints will be looking for at least £100,000 (that's a conservative guess) for him, considering he's not out of contract until 2008.

More worringly is the news today that John Sutton may have signed a pre contract agreement with Falkirk. This was reported on Real Radio and would be a disaster, as the Bairns may try and take him now rather than wait until the summer. With all due respect to Falkirk, I'd have thought he could find someone better than Sutton to sign for.

As for players coming in, we know all about what happened with Carl Finnigan. We also went after fellow striker Daryll Duffy, but we were priced out of that one - either through wages, transfer fee or even both.

Moves for Clyde pair Eddie Malone and Stephen O'Donnell have also failed, although we may not have heard the last of that one. Malone's agent is furious he wasn't allowed to move to an SPL club, whilst it seems Clyde had accepted the offer then changed their minds. With both players out of contract in the summer, pre contract agreements may be how Saints get their hands on the duo - and that could even force them to move now. It seems the Saints board were prepared to meet Clyde's valuation, but MacPherson didn't feel they were worth it.

Saints chairman Stewart Gilmour claims there is £100,000 to be spent on players before the end of Wednesday, although whether that covers transfer fees, wages or a combination is a mystery. There's a bounce game tomorrow night which will include some trialists, although who they are is a mystery.

Rumours have linked us with Albion Rovers Scott Chaplain, Tom Brighton of Millwall and Charlie Miller and Robbie Winters, who are available after finishing their spell in Norway. No doubt none of them will be playing tomorrow night!

Here's hoping we can at least get someone in before the window shuts to give the place a boost.
