Smudger out for a year

Last updated : 27 May 2009 By Stuart Gillespie
Smudger's season is now over - meaning he won't play at Hampden - and he'll miss a sizeable chunk of next season as well. It's a major blow for both the player and the club as Smith is a talented keeper who has been capped for the Scotland under-21 side. It's even worse for the player as he'd only just replaced Mark Howard in goal.

Howard will now see out the rest of the season between the sticks - unless he gets injured or suspended, in which case goalkeeping coach Paul Mathers will be handed a game. Howard is currently in contract negotiations with the club and this new will strengthen his position - although Saints boss Gus MacPherson will still need to try to find at least one new shot stopper in the summer.

Get well soon Smudger!
