Smith hasn't played for the first team since picking up a serious knee injury back in March, only returning to training a month or so ago. The loan move will allow him to get some regular first team football, helping him back to full fitness. Dunfermline have made the move after Greg Fleming got injured, so Smudger is set for plenty of game time at East End Park.
Meanwhile, former Saint Gary Mason has been released by Hamilton. The midfielder was let go in the summer after the collapse of Setanta and was only contracted to the Lanarkshire club until the end of the year.
