Search goes on as redundancies denied

The Saints board met today for the first time since MacPherson was sacked last week, but it seems the meeting hasn't brought the appointment of a replacement any closer. A statement released by Gilmour tonight claims the club has been "inundated" with applications, with more likely to follow in the next few days before a short list is drawn up.

Quite who is applying is anyone's guess, with former player Mixu Paatelainen the only person to have made their interest public at this stage. Chances are MacPherson's former assistant Andy Millen has popped his CV into the mix, but the rest is really a guessing game. A new man can't be appointed soon enough, as he's going to have to assemble at least half a team.

Today's papers claimed that every member of staff, aside from Millen and the players, had been issued with a letter telling them they possibly faced redundancy. This sent the messageboards into overdrive, from suggestions this meant a takeover was close to people claiming this meant we were doomed.

Gilmour has denied this tonight, saying it was only footballing staff - such as coaches, video analysts and the like, who received the letter as a new manager might like his own staff. Fair enough - but this is the first time I've heard of any club doing this...
