Saints look at Magpies

Last updated : 14 March 2012 By Stuart Gillespie

Assistant manager Tommy Craig - a former coach with the Magpies - recently watched the four in action and there is a suggestion they have already been to Paisley for a trial spell. McDermott - son of former Liverpool player Terry - is the only one that isn't a striker, described as a box to box midfielder on Newcastle's website. Donaldson has been capped by England's under-19 side, while striker Airey was sent home after a brief stint on loan at Hibs earlier in the season.

All four are set to leave St James' Park in the summer and it looks as if Craig is trying to use his connections to bring some or all of them to Saints. There is also a suggestion we might be able to get some youngsters on loan from the Tyneside club.

Picking up youth players let go by Premiership sides and getting their young talent on loan is nothing new in the SPL but it's something we haven't done and it's good to see steps are being taken to address that.
