Saints in for Smith

Last updated : 28 January 2009 By Stuart Gillespie
Smith played reasonably regularly for Rangers a few years ago, but since picking up some serious groin problems at the end of 2006 he has played just two games, which were in last season's Scottish Cup. He is extremely short of match practice and has previously been in negotiations with clubs in the English Championship.

Saints are in desperate need of a leftback due to the suspension of Franco Miranda for the next few games. The Argentinian has also been carrying an injury in recent weeks, but with the choices for replacements restricted to Tonet and Ryan McCay, Miranda has had to play through the pain barrier.

Aside from his lack of match practice, Smith would solve that problem and also provided Miranda with some competition until the end of the season.
