Saints 0-2 Motherwell

The main incident was in the second half when Brian McGinty was level with the last Motherwell defender. They both jumped for the ball, the Motherwell man wiped McGinty out and both fell to the ground. Definite booking, possible sending off. Not at all, after the Motherwell man received treatment for his fake injury, he was allowed to be subbed. The crazy thing was, as McGinty had received treatment he had to go off the pitch for Saints free kick. Wonderful refereeing!

This came after an earlier incident when a Motherwell player was adgudged to have fouled someone which left Junior Mendes racing through. The referee had obviously not heard of the advantage rule and decided to bring play back for a free kick. He apologised soon after but that didn't make up for what was a great chance for Saints.

Later on in the second half, after David Lowing put in a tackle on a Motherwell guy, the Motherwell lad got up and shoved Lowing. Great idea mate, have a nice early bath, or so you'd think. Not so with Terrible Toner, not even a talking to. Eventually this lead to some shocking tackles later, including one which resulted in Scott McKenzie having to be dragged from a fight.

Saints best spell came in the first half, and their best chance came when McGinty smacked the bar from the edge of the box. Greg Denham came close with a header after Ricky Gillies free kick, and there was some good play from Junior Mendes. Motherwell also had chances in the first half, and the defence looked very shaky at times.

In the second half Motherwell dominated in between their shocking tackles, the goals in the end coming from a Dirk Lehman header and a Steven Pearson volley. Ludo Roy was once again outstanding between the sticks, and Denham, Andy Dow, Mendes, McGinty and home debutant Martin Cameron all put in fine performances. When David Lowing replaced Sergei Baltacha he came close with a low drive after a Cameron flick on, but that was it. Chris Kerr was shocking, whilst Paul Rudden, Gillies and McKenzie were average.

It seemed to be a similar Motherwell performance to the side we faced in the SPl. Not great, but taking advantage of an even less great Saints. Saints meanwhile must go back to 3 up front, we were a real threat until Mendes got injured.

Few positives could be taken from this game, the only good thing really being the performances of the new players. Roll on Saturday against Morton.
