O'Brien Going To Crewe

Last updated : 14 July 2002 By Stuart Gillespie
O'Brien was sold to Blackburn along with David McNamee in February 1999 a few months after Tom Hendrie took charge, for a combined total of £600,000. An extra £1million would be given per player after set numbers of appearances. unfortunately the deal only covered a start in the league, so when O'Brien came off the bench in the Worthington Cup we didn't get any cash. Now he's looking to revive a few years sitting in the reserves with a move to Crewe.

Speaking to the Sunday Mail he said "I am hoping something can be finalised soon between the clubs." Personally I think Saints should put in a loan bid for him, or even McNamee as we desperately need someone down the right.

Elsewhere, another ex Saint Alan Combe is about to sign for Bradford. Combe signed for Dundee United in the summer of 1998 and was the first choice goalie from about Christmas until December 2000, where he had a little altercation with the linesman. Ever since then he's been back up, and was on loan at Bradford last season. A deal fell through when they went into administration but the move looks set to be completed soon. Combe was named in the Scotland B sqaud before being promoted to the seniors due to injury. During his time at Love Street he also made the under 21s side.
