News Round Up

First things first. John Coughlin will be Saints boss next year, the club confirmed this last week. On the same day, they also officially announced that current Dunfermline player, and former Rangers and Kilmarnock player, Gus MacPherson will be Coughlin's assistant for next season. MacPherson will also be playing, and it looks like we will return to a back three next season.

MacPherson isn't the only new player Saints have unveiled. John O'Neil was announced a few days ago, the midfielder signing a part-time 2 year deal after rejecting Queen of the South's offer. A new goalie has been announced today, with Arbroath's goalie Craig Hinchcliffe joining Saints. both are good signings.

The really good news for Saints fans is that Ricky Gillies will sign a new 2 year deal after returning from his holiday. The club revealed this good news last night, and it is likely Gillies will be the Saints captain next season. Gillies was expected to go to SPL side Partick Thistle, and even said himself a few weeks ago it looked 80-20 in favour of him going. However, he's signed the new deal, and is probably the only current Saints player on SPL wages. He'll also be in line for a testimonial, having spent 10 years of his career at Love Street.

Not such good news comes for 10 members of last seasons squad. Ally Mitchell, Jamie McGowan, Greig Denham, Jamie Dunbar, Graham Guy, Mark Turner, David Lowing, Martin Baker, Chris Kerr and Paul Rudden will all be released when their contract ends. The only surprises are Lowing Dunbar and Guy, as they do have some potential.

Meanwhile, Mark Roberts has had his offer of a new contract withdrawn, and so he probably won't be at Saints next season. Apparently he spent 6 weeks deciding whether to sign the deal or not! Martin Cameron is still in negotiations with the club, whilst Kris Robertson has just a few days to decide if he's staying. He has been linked, for some bizarre reason, with both Hibs and Aberdeen, and the signing of Hinchcliffe today probably means he will be leaving. If he did go we'd get compensation.

Finally, we come to the rumours of who we might be signing. Stirling player Stevie Nicholas is currently on trial, whilst we may or may not be interested in his Stirling team mate Robert Dunn, it just depends which paper you read. We're also interested, depending what you read, in Ayr's Mark Campbell, and we are on the lookout for another striker.

P.S. We lost 4-0 to Alloa last week but I've tried to keep that quiet :-)
