News In Brief

Last updated : 17 May 2003 By Stuart Gillespie
In Thursday's news round up I mentioned we were interested in Stirling Albion player Robert Dunn. Dunn has now been released by Stirling, but Saints boss John Coughlin has said that it is unlikely we'll be signing him. Coughlin is off on holiday this week, as is chairman Stewart Gilmour, so it's unlikely there will be much news. Rumours suggest Gilmour is off to Spain to see the UEFA Cup final, whilst Coughlin is away on a cruise, in preparation for our title challenge next season which will be exactly that. Coughlin has said he's waiting to see who the SPL clubs release to see who we are signing.

Some of our former players have had mixed fortunes in the transfer market. Former goalie John Hillcoat, who was in fine form for us in 2002, looks set to join up with former Saints goalie Campbell Money at Ayr United. Ayr have also been linked with Martin Baker and David Lowing, whilst Raith Rovers have been linked with Greig Denham and Ally Mitchell. Kerr Christie, who was released during this season, will be signed up by Dumbarton shortly.

Meanwhile, Jim Dick has been released by Albion Rovers, whilst Mark Yardley looks set to win a new deal. And of course, we all feel sorry for Sergei Baltacha, who Millwall released as he didn't improve their squad. Or, in other words, he was rank.

Former Saint Tom Brown has retired from football after a season at Dumbarton. You'd think with all the injury problems he had with us it would be because of injury, but it's not. Instead, it's because hs is disillusioned with the game, and plans to study at University. Good luck Tom.

Mark Roberts has had a nice moan in the papers yesterday about having his contract offer withdrawn. He was supposedly furious to learn about this on the website, and had a moan at them. It was in the PDE first Mark! The fact that he took 6 weeks to make his mind up, claiming he was waiting until we were safe (3 weeks ago that happened!) is irrelevant. Like Greig Denham, he claims he'll come back and haunt us. Well, he was like a ghost on the pitch.

Season tickets go on sale next week, and the good news is that they are the same price as last year. Get down to Love Street and sort it out ASAP. The strange thing, however, is that the Renfrewshire Cup Final against Morton isn't included. Hmm. The club has denied that a pre season game with Bradford City has been arranged, despite it being on Bradford's website. Instead the club are planning some friendlies against lower league teams so we can hammer them. Are we playing East Stirlingshire then?

We should be a bit closer to finding out the identity of the 10th team in our league next season. Falkirk make their case to the SPL about their stadium, and if the SPL have any sense they'll tell them to sod off. You can't groundshare, at least we couldn't. If they are allowed in, it looks like Motherwell will be in division 1 next season.

Kirstie S has claimed her prize in the prediction league. She has also donated her prize to the RAH Children's Ward, so nice one :-)

Finally, I have discovered why the Paisley Daily Express Website hasn't been updated recently. They have a new one, and forgot to tell everyone. It's at http://www.icrenfrewshire.co.uk/ and is very snazzy. Hopefully it will be more up to date than the old one.
