Mehmet flies to Turkey

Last updated : 10 May 2010 By Stuart Gillespie

There were suspicions after Saturday's game against Aberdeen that Mehmet would be off, with rumours linking him with moves north and south of the border. There had, in the past, been stories linking him with Turkey due to family connections, and he's wasted no time in sealing a move there.

Mehmet has signed a pre-contract agreement with the club and will officially join them at the start of July. Some people seem to be thinking Mehmet is only in Turkey for talks, but the big picture on the Genclerbirligi website of him wearing a replica kit gives the game away a bit!

It seems ridiculous that Mehmet, our top scorer for the last few seasons, wasn't offered a new deal to stay at the club. He is one of our best players and made it clear he would listen to an offer, but none was forthcoming.

Mehmet started his career at West Ham but joined Saints in 2005 from Dunfermline. He quickly contracted mumps and had a poor season, not scoring his first goal until April - but it one us the league! He had a similarly low strike rate the following season, but again scored an important goal as he struck the equaliser in the famous 3-2 win over Motherwell that secured our SPL safety.

With John Sutton leaving in 2007, Billy stepped into a more central role in the team and scored a reasonable number of goals. The following season he struck a hat-trick against Dumbarton and also scored a winner against Celtic in the Scottish Cup, capping it with another crucial relegation-avoiding goal against Falkirk.

This season he scored five on the opening day against East Stirling and also bagged a hat-trick against Alloa. His most important strike came in February, when he scored a wonderful goal against Hearts that won us the League Cup semi-final. It was easily his best performance in a Saints shirt.

It's fair to say Billy didn't score enough goals for a striker, but he never gave less than 100 per cent in nearly 200 appearances for the club. If you look back at the last few years, nearly every key goal - promotion, survival, cup games - was scored by him.

All the best Billy and thanks for the memories.
