McGowan admits police assault

Last updated : 16 December 2013 By Stuart Gillespie

The incident happened in Airdrie in August when McGowan kicked two officers - ironically one of them being a Sergeant Tony Fitzpatrick! He had not guilty pleas to kicking a special constable and acting in a threatening and abusive manner accepted by the Crown.

Sentence at Airdrie Sheriff Court has been deferred until January to allow a criminal justice social work to be compiled. It seems McGowan has a previous conviction for assaulting the police, meaning he could be in serious trouble and may end up in prison.

The club have so far declined to comment on the situation. The last time they've had to deal with this (aside from Darren McGregor being cleared of assault last year) was when Kirk Broadfoot was convicted of assault back in 2004. Back then he narrowly avoided jail when Saints boss Gus MacPherson wrote a letter to the sheriff supporting his player and you'd imagine Danny Lennon will do the same this time around.
