McGeoch voted out

Last updated : 03 May 2012 By Stuart Gillespie

The EGM was called last month after links between McGeoch's attempts to buy a controlling interest in the club and Rangers' company secretary Gary Withey were exposed. The selling consortium - led by current chairman Stewart Gilmour - called on McGeoch to resign and when he didn't they called tonight's meeting where all but one person voted for him to be removed. The size of the number of people against him is surprising but irrelevant - the selling consortium have the controlling interest so could have pushed it through by himself.

McGeoch was part of Gilmour's consortium that bought the club to keep it out of Reg Brealey's hands almost exactly 14 years ago. He wanted to buy the club instead of seeing Richard Atkinson's 10000 Hours Community Interest Company get the controlling interest but failed to provide full details.

A few months ago it emerged that Withey had been advising him and business partner Paul Davies. McGeoch claimed it was innocent and despite more rather tedious links to Rangers and Craig Whyte appearing he stayed put - even though he knew he'd probably be voted out at an EGM.

This makes his failure to appear tonight rather confusing. He may have had a very good reason and if he did I apologise, however why did he not turn up to defend himself or dish some dirt? Why not just resign and we could have avoided all this mess?

Answers are certainly needed but thankfully this sorry chapter is now at an end and we can hopefully put it behind us and move on.
