Lennon hoping for a leftback

Last updated : 02 July 2011 By Stuart Gillespie

Lennon has managed to lure five players - Steven Thompson, Paul McGowan, Nigel Hasselbaink, Graeme Smith and Gary Teale - to Greenhill Road so far this season. Despite the number of arrivials, he is adopting a quality over quantity approach as he bids to replace the numerous players departing at the end of last season.

One of those was Slovenian fullback Jure Travner, leaving Saints with a large hole on the left of defence. A Dutch leftback has recently been on trial with the club and impressed Lennon during last week's trip to Portugal. Rumours suggest he'll be played as a trialist in next week's friendlies.

Lennon has indicated a deal for a player for the problem position is close and said: "I still need to sign a left-sided defender but am hopeful of doing that next week." Whether that is the trialist or someone else is unclear.

The Graham Carey saga is continuing to rumble on, with some papers saying it could happen and some saying it probably won't.
