Hendrie Goes - Sort Of

Last updated : 05 September 2002 By Stuart Gillespie
It could be classed as a PR disaster after yesterday, when Tom Hendrie was quoted in the Daily Record as saying he was staying. He said on Radio Clyde he was staying. Stewart Gilmour said in the Paisley Daily Express that Hendrie wasn't being sacked, having compensation sorted or been asked to resign. This morning a statement appears on The Official Site saying that Tom Hendrie has been asked to tale leave of his duties (most fans pointing out he took leave of his senses ages ago) and that assistant manager John Coughlin, who was appointed at the same time as Hendrie, will take charge of Saturday's game against Morton. Hendrie's future will be discussed further next week.

Of course the national press have decided to report this differently. Sky Sports News scroll bar said he had been sacked, at the same time the presenter was informing us he had been asked to step down! Their website also says he has been sacked, whilst STV went with this line as well. Meanwhile BBC Online comes closest by saying he has effectively been sacked.

The rumours started on Monday on www.blackandwhitearmy.com and an apology is due to Eminem's Mother, Captain Sensible and div after what I said yesterday. Stupid me thought that three different press outlets saying was staying actually meant that! Of course, Tom Hendrie blamed oter people and said Jim Delahunt, among others, was at fault for the rumours. Hmmmm. There are also rumours that John Coughlin will be assisted at present by Saints legend Jackie Copland, although these haven't been backed up.

Hendrie's job has been on a shoogly peg ever since Christmas time last year, in the eyes of the fans at least. People say he needs more time to turn things around, well he's had since Christmas! How long does he need? Bustups with Iain Nicolson and Steven McGarry, reported bust ups with Ludovic Roy, Jamie McGowan and Ricky Robb haven't helped his cause, but neither have his after match comments, "5 goals from 5 breakaways" being my particular favourite.

So we can all look forward to Cappielow on Saturday, no need for the Hendrie Out banners. Time to go and get behind John Coughlin, someone the players all get on with. Watch out for Ludovic Roy, Jamie McGowan, Ricky Robb and Ian Ross all making miracle recoveries from their various injuries :-)
