The striker, who is just 28, has been out of the game for 18 months or so with a knee injury and after a number of aborted comebacks has decided to hang up his boots. McPhee was Blackpool's record signing when they bought him from Hull a few years ago and he'll now miss out on playing in the English Premiership.

McPhee played for Saints towards the end of the 2000/01 season during a loan spell from Coventry City. Although he didn't score, he was a major help to Saints ultimately unsuccessful bid to beat the drop with his pace causing opposition defences all kinds of problems. He also played for Port Vale and Portuguese outfit Beira-Mar during his career.
