First survival, then the top six as Lennon moves in

While the last few years have seen Saints fight relegation from Gus MacPherson, we can't be too greedy in expecting anything different too soon. We have a new manager taking his first steps in the SPL and we've reached this stage of the summer with question marks still hanging over the future of a number of players.

Lennon said: "We've got to be realistic about what our aims and objectives are going to be. It will be survival - that's our main objective, that we remain a Premier League club.

"I think you've got to set your sights realistically but go in there a little bit higher because, if you go in a bit lower, once you reach those targets, individuals can take their eye off the ball. My philosophy is that I will try to bring entertaining, exciting football for the supporters but that will be based upon discipline and solid defending also.

"Survival is the priority, at any club not just St Mirren, but I’ll be looking for us to finish around sixth place."

As mentioned above, several Saints players are out of contract and waiting for a new deal and Lennon plans to watch footage of them in action before deciding whether or not they are worth new deals. While he realises defence is important, Lennon is also looking to play a style of football that should get a few fans back to Saints games:

"With the right types of players coming in, the fans will see a brand of football here that will be entertaining. My philosophy is that we like to get the ball down and play exciting football, but based on a foundation of solid defending.

"When I went into Cowdenbeath I was told we wouldn’t get out the third or second division playing exciting football. But we did it."

Lennon has revealed he has one or two players in mind for next season and also has liinks with English Premiership side Bolton, which should put those fears about a lack of contacts to rest.

It's great to hear someone talking so positively about the club for a change and I, for one, cannot wait to see what he does in terms of squad development over the next few weeks. Bring on the new season!
