Board claim Whyte link

McGeoch and business partner Paul Davies have been involved in a consortium looking to buy the 52 per cent controlling interest in the club. Recent revelations about the involvement of Rangers company secretary Gary Withey saw the other board members - led by chairman Stewart Gilmour - to deny McGeoch's resignation or there'd be an EGM when he'd almost certainly be voted off the board. With McGeoch saying he'll only go if someone buys his shares the club has revealed the EGM will be held at Greenhill Road on Thursday, May 3.

However, they also claim they have an e-mail which shows Davies was due to meet with Whyte at the end of last year. McGeoch and Davies claimed last week they had never met Whyte so obviously someone is telling lies. McGeoch and Davies representatives released a statement earlier maintaining they don't know him, although there is then some explanation suggesting one of Davies' people was due to meet with one of Whyte's people about a matter involving Rangers and nothing to do with St Mirren. Whyte claims he doesn't know McGeoch or Davies - which must be true as Craig Whyte is a stand up guy.

It would seem that McGeoch will be on his way. If the board's evidence stacks up and McGeoch or Davies does know Whyte then they cannot be trusted. Ignore who they are connected with - they have denied knowing someone it seems they did and that wrecks their credibility. It's a superb move by the board as they've effectively discredited McGeoch and any dirt he has to dish at the EGM will be taken with a pinch of salt.

Interestingly the board opted not to respond to McGeoch's claim that they knew all about his meeting with Withey - and it would still be nice to know why they waited the best part of two months before going public about McGeoch's apparent Rangers links, especially because it took them just as long before they started to do something about the connections that had apparently caused them so much anger!

Still plenty to come on this one over the next month about the AGM and, regardless of your views on takeovers, Gilmour and McGeoch, that is the last thing St Mirren needs.
