What do we still need?

Signing Steven Thompson, Nigel Hasselbaink and Graeme Smith, as well as bringing in Paul McGowan permanently, is a good start to the summer by anyone's standards. However, arguably Danny Lennon needs to sign just as many players again if we are to have a decent squad for next season. Fortunately, general manager Brian Caldwell has said there is still money for tree or four new players - so where does the money need spent most?

Centre half: Putting aside thoughts on his abilities, the departure of John Potter leaves us light at the back. We still have Darren McGregor, Lee Mair and Marc McAusland, as well as youngster Dominic Kennedy, while players like David Barron can fill in there. However, we could desperately do with someone else to provide competition and cover for that area. Mair is injury prone and defenders are more likely to pick up suspensions due to the nature of the game. Going with three first team centre halfs, a youngster and then guys who can fill in if required is just asking for trouble. Former Hibs and Caley Thistle defender Chris Hogg would be ideal, but we do need someone in.

Left back: The departure of Jure Travner is a major blow and once again leaves us looking for a left back. Travner's bombing runs and crossing was a joy to watch last season, even if he wasn't the best defensively, and we need a replacement if we're going with a back four again. It's another position where Barron can fill in, but ideally we need a proper leftback. We've been linked with former Motherwell and Plymouth man Jim Paterson, while Bob harris is available after leaving Queen of the South and would also provide a threat from set-pieces.

Attacking/creative midfielder: The return of McGowan means we have the same key midfielders as last season, but there isn't a great deal of creativity in it. It's mainly tough tackling players who can get forward on occasion, but are better sitting in and defending. If we're to provide ammunition for the likes of Thompson and Hasselbaink, we need at least one more player in. Yet again we're short of wingers, so someone like that would solve the lack of width and creativity. Returns for both Graham Carey and Andy Dorman have been rumoured, although it's unlikely either would happen. A left footed player would be ideal - and someone who can take a set-piece.

Striker: OK, we've brought in Thompson and Hasselbaink, but Michael Higdon, Craig Dargo and Gareth Wardlaw have all gone. Thompson has rarely been prolific and is better at supporting the main striker, while Hasselbaink seems more comfortable as a winger. Put simply, we need a goal getter, a poacher. Ex Motherwell man Chris Porter is available after leaving Derby but would probably be too expensive, while Daryl Duffy is also on a free - although has struggled for goals and injuries in recent years with the likes of Hibs and Bristol Rovers. Yes, Jon McShane will come into things this year but we really need a proper striker in his mid 20s to help us out.

So, four empty places in the squad and we've identified the best way these slots can be filled. Over to you Danny and Brian!
