Should they stay or should they go?

Last updated : 22 May 2011 By Stuart Gillespie

The purpose of the last piece was mainly to pay tribute to those leaving with a look at their Saints careers, as well as providing views on whether or not ditching the players was the right choice. This will mainly look at the latter aspect - none of them are definitely leaving after all. Again, we'll go through it in squad number order and also include those who are already under contract as there aren't too many of them!

Paul Gallacher: Relatively reliable in his first season, a wee but susceptible at crosses last year. Usually dependable, plenty of experience at this level and while he's a high earner, who else can we get?
Should he be kept? Yes.

David van Zanten: Took a while to get going this season after difficult spells with Hibs and Hamilton, however now looks like being back to the old Vanzy we know and love. Even proved he can play in a back four, which wasn't the case earlier in the season.
Should he be kept? Yes - although he's under contract anyway.

David Barron: Spent most of the season injured, but when he's fit he's arguably one of our best players. Great at fullback or in a back three and can deliver a good cross. Offered a deal in the summer and rejected but has had injury problems this year and now wants to stay.
Should he be kept? Yes.

Lee Mair: A poor first season, a bit better this year - and much better when not playing beside John Potter. However, he's still a bit suspect and not really commanding enough.
Should he be kept? Possibly. Seems to have an option anyway and could even be the captain. Suppose his experience could help.

Hugh Murray: A legend. Seems to have overcome his latest "is this the end?" phase after  a disappointing, injury hit first half of the season and is worthwhile having around for his fight and commitment.
Should he be kept? Yes - even if it's just because he's injured until September and shouldn't be let go in such circumstances.

Steven Thomson: Getting on in years and a high earner, but likes getting forward and scoring, good passer and tackler. A decent player and it would be good to get another year out of him.
Should he be kept? Yes.

Michael Higdon: 15 goals in a season. Say no more.
Should he be kept? Yes - but will almost certainly be going elsewhere for more money.

Jim Goodwin: Sometimes he adds much needed dig to the midfield, sometimes he's anonymous, sometimes he's in between. yet to see why the Hamilton fans were so frustrated to lose him.
Should he be kept? Possibly.

Craig Samson: Rather worried when he signed but, aside from the odd mistake, has been a pleasant surprise. However, not SPL class and not good competition for Gallacher.
Should he be kept? No - we could do with someone to provide real competition for the number one shirt.

Darren McGregor: Superb defender who will surely only get better as he gets more SPL experience.
Should he be kept? Yes - get him on a longer contract!

Paul McQuade: Struggled with injuries in his first full-time season and not given much of a chance under Danny Lennon. Rumours he's not really coped with the step up.
Should he be kept? No - aside from the Peterhead game, he hasn't done much when he's had a chance. But he's under contract.

Jure Travner: Like Vanzy, had a slow start and just got better and better (aside from the Hamilton red card). Bombing runs forward, decent in the tackle, superb crosser. More please.
Should he be kept? Yes - but will probably go elsewhere for more money.

Marc McAusland: When he plays at centre-half he isn't too bad. The problem is he seems to be getting played as a fullback or a wingback, where he isn't comfortable - it's Sergei Baltacha all over again. The (incorrect) suggestions he's only getting a game because his dad is on the board don't help things.
Should he be kept? Yes - there is potential there, but he must step forward next season even though he has two years left on his contract.

Paul McGowan: An infuriating player. Clearly talented, but at times he seems to think hes the only one playing and doesn't pass, trying to beat everyone. However, his passing and crossing can be brilliant and his dribbling - when he does it right - is good.
Should he be kept? Yes - although he isn't our player. Would be good to sign him permanently or have him on loan again.

Jon McShane: Spent the year on loan at Dumbarton and after breaking his ankle scored a load of goals. Definitely one for the future.
Should he be kept? Yes - which is why he has a two year deal.

Aaron Mooy: Has found first team football hard to come by since joining in October - although he's hardly been given a chance by Danny Lennon. When he has, he has shown talent and his passing and vision could be a real asset.
Should he be kept? Yes - although giving im a two year contract may be a bit much.

Kenny McLean: Broke into the first team this year and has been superb. Passing is excellent, willing to take players on and goals will come. An exciting talent.
Should he be kept? Yes - and thankfully he's under contract for a while yet.

So, aside from Samson and McQuade, no major argument with anyone getting offered a contract. Now it's up to the players to sign them.
