What Do We Need?

Probably not. Saints boss Gus MacPherson is undoubtedly busy working away in an attempt to freshen up the squad with a few new faces, but there isn't exactly a lot of speculation about who we're bringing in (or getting rid of). While the John Rankin saga shows that's not necessarily a bad thing, it's always nice to have a name or two to talk about in the final few days of the window. Even if it's just to say they're rubbish.

If the squad were to stay fit and suspension free for the rest of the season, then the current squad would be fine. However, that's probably wishful thinkings. We've already suffered from a few injury problems - losing Craig Dargo and Ian Maxwell for large chunks of the season - and it would be nice to have a squad big enough to cope with such problems if they occur again. So, where do we need to strengthen?

The most important place to strengthen is probably up front. We struggled badly for goals without Dargo and his return has helped to improve that situation - even if he hasn't yet scored himself. Some of our other forwards are simply not SPL standard and bringing in another player would give us some decent options up front and help us out if Dargo or Billy Mehmet can't play for whatever reason. A striker with either height or pace (or both!) would be nice.

Another place we could do with improving is in defence. Maxwell's return has helped sort things out there, but again it would be good to have another centre half. We really only have three (plus Andy Millen) and an extra one - preferably with a bit of height - would be handy, especially when the inevitable suspensions occur.

The only other area we could really do with bringing someone in for is the right wing. Chris Birchall's arrival in August showed that the management do realise we need a new right winger. However, he left in December and has not been replaced. A natural right winger - rather than a converted full back - would be perfect now that we seem to be playing with a 4-4-2. A right sided version of Mark Corcoran or Franco Miranda would be ideal.

That's probably all we need to make sure we're fully covered until the summer, when we can get on with some proper strengthening. However, who knows which players MacPherson will bring in during the next week or so - that's if he decides we need one...
