Transfer Window Analysis

Last updated : 09 September 2007 By Stuart Gillespie
It was clear at the end of last season that we were in serious needs of some new players - we were struggling and some of the current squad were moving on. Here's who left and who they've been replaced by:

Iain Anderson - Chris Birchall
Stephen Anderson - Marc McAusland
John Baird - Mark Docherty
Kirk Broadfoot - Will Haining
Tony Bullock - Mark Howard
Scott Gemmill - David Barron
Craig Hinchcliffe - Paul Mathers
Brian McGinty - No one
Kevin McGowne - No one
David McKenna - Stephen McGinn
Andy Millen (effectively retired) - Gary Mason
John Sutton - Craig Dargo

Simon Lappin, who left in January, has been replaced by Franco Miranda. For easiness, the young players who've left like Gemmill I've replaced with the next batch to come into the first team - even though they play in different positions.

On the face of it, it doesn't look too bad. Numbers wise, we're only a couple down on where we were last season. However, a closer look reveals the situation isn't so good.

Kevin McGowne and Brian McGinty may not have played much last season, but that's no excuse for them not to be replaced with another centre half and striker. We've been after a striker for more than a year - look attempts to sign Craig Brewster, Carl Finnigan and Roy Dayan - and we've been in need of another defender for nearly as long. Trialists have come and gone for both positions, but have deemed no better than what we already have (hard to believe considering some of our strikers).

In those cases, stories of transfer day deadline woe don't cut it. When you've been in need of the players for so long - and have known for months which division you'll be playing in - it's unacceptable not to have managed to get the players in.

The striker issue is the main problem. In the past Gemmill and McKenna provided options - now there are no young strikers and we're constantly having to turn to Alex Burke, who is nowhere near SPL level.

The lack of goals is partly down to not solving the striker problem, but it's also down to the fact we've never managed to properly replace Charlie Adam. Birchall may do that now, but it's another position it has taken us more than a year to sort out (ignoring Stephen O'Donnell, which Gus seems to do on a regular basis). While Mason should prove a good signing, he's like too many of the midfielders we already have - the priority should have been to get an attack minded midfielder in first.

On the plus side, the signings so far - with the exception of Dargo, who we've yet to see in action - look like being good enough. The worry is there haven't been enough, and not in the right positions.

Will it cost us? Let's wait and see.
