SPL and Saints say fans don't matter

When it emerged a few weeks ago that the chairmen were considering two leagues of 10, there was uproar. Fans and media were dead against the proposal and, with a 16 team league looking unlikely, threw their support behind proposals for a 14 team league. Clubs that were supposedly in favour of the 10 team league made it known they weren't. Saints? Well, we released a statement saying we were releasing a statement, then said we weren't in favour of a 10 team league, but weren't exactly against it either.

A poll by supporters direct revealed 90 per cent of fans were against a 10 team league. A poll on Saints' official forum attracted votes from 148 people. A whopping two were in favour of a 10 team league. The media campaign continued. And what did that get us?

A 10 team league and a 12 team league. Wow. And in a stunning piece of imagination, they will be called the Premiership and the Championship. Again, wow.

The message from the SPL is clear - the views of supporters do not matter. All we care about is the TV companies, the sponsors and their money. The ordinary fan does not matter a jot.

It would be unfair to claim all clubs support this. At present Hearts, Inverness Caley Thistle and Kilmarnock are against this. Missing from that list is St. Mirren, meaning the people in charge of our club seem to think this is the way forward - despite being told in no uncertain terms by the fans, the customers, the people that matter, that they didn't.

What sort of idiotic company - and I refer here to our club and the SPL - would see there was such anger, such opposition to a proposal and yet still go with it? Simple. One that didn't care about it's customers.

Many fans are talking of boycotts, not buying season tickets and all the rest of it, but why will that make a difference? If there's one thing nine SPL chairmen have shown today it's that our money does not matter.
