It's not over 'till it's over

The odds are stacked in our favour. We are nine points clear of relegation and each of ourselves and Hamilton have five games left. Hamilton have won just three times all season yet need to repeat that in their next five games just to draw level with us. It shouldn't happen - but at 11am on Sunday they were 12 points behind us with six games left, only for them to pull off a shock win over Hibs.

That result is likely to give them confidence, just as our win over Hamilton did a few weeks ago. It would be illogical if they were to get the points required to stay up, but this is the time of the season when strange things happen. After all, with an hour gone of our game against Hamilton the other week, who'd have thought Michael Higdon would start playing like Didier Drogba? Who'd have thought we'd add another win to open the gap up to 12 points?

We cannot do anything about Hamilton's form - aside from the game against them. What we must do is ensure that their form is irrelevant because we've put the situation to bed. A growing number of people seem to assume we are safe, but that is far from the case. If we lose this weekend and Hamilton win, then beat us the gap is suddenly down to three points and nerves will start to jangle. We cannot repeat the mistakes of 2009.

Nothing is ever easy if you support Saints and it is this sort of situation that would be a doddle for another team to see out, but one we could mess up. The players cannot start phoning it in until we are mathematically safe. Once we are secure in 11th, they can do whatever they like - but they must continue to give their all until we are over the line.

Saints, you're in a great position. Just don't screw it up.
