Coughlin And Collins: Just How Similar Are They?

Last updated : 01 December 2003 By Stuart Gillespie
First of all let's look at who they were replacing. Coughlin was replacing a successful manager who was sacked for poor form. Collins replaced a successful manager in the summer who was retiring. The reasons are different, but who they were replacing is efectively the same. Coughlin was making his first moves into management, whilst for Collins it was virtually his first as well.

Due to the fact they were replacing successful managers, they had massive fans expectations on them. Coughlin was meant to try and put Saints in a title challenging position, which he clearly didn't do. Collins was meant to try and keep Thistle up, something which he had failed to do and so was given the boot.

Who's replacing them? Well, with a few exceptions, the names being linked with the Saints job have suddenly been linked to the Thistle job. And, in the meantime, senior members of the playing staff are acting as caretaker managers. At Love Street it's veteran Gus MacPherson, whilst at Thistle it's Gerry Britton and Derek Whyte.

As for results, both have done extremely well. Coughlin has at least managed to win a few league games this season, something Collins only managed last season when he played Hibs in an end of season game. Both managers have had fans on their backs for sometime, due to the fact results just weren't coming.

Over the summer, both managers had to sign entirely new squads, though for different reasons. Saints used the summer to clear out deadwood and bring in some new players, whilst Thistle had to replace the likes of Alex Burns and Scott Paterson. Those two, and many others, were star performers for Thistle last season but had left for bigger money. So whilst both managers had to form new squads, which haven't worked, they had to do so for different reasons.

So there you have it. Despite being separated by a division, both Saints and Partick Thistle find themselves in a similar situation, looking for new managers after getting rid of two who were extremely alike and had suffered similar problems. Both clubs even seem to be after the same replacements, but lets hope Saints can get the better of Thistle there.
